Lorraine
C. Holmes Settles is a Certified Fund Raising Executive with
over 20 years of professional experience. She is a founding
principal and CEO of The AFRAM Group, a full-service, development
consultant firm based in  Washington,
D.C. She has served more than 40 organizations as a consultant
or employee of nonprofit organizations.
She
has provided these organizations with her expertise related
to development audits, feasibility studies, annual fund management,
major gift development, selected special events, executive
search, public relations, proposal writing, strategic planning,
volunteer recruitment and orientation, staff training, governing
board retreats, endowment development, and
on-site interim management services.
She
is committed to working with small development shops, and
emerging nonprofits as well as established organizations committed
to expanding their fund-raising potential. She is also a noted
trainer on such topics as endowment development, diversity,
and small shop management.
Ms.
Holmes Settles is a past president of the Greater Washington,
D.C. Chapter of the Association of Fundraising Professionals
(AFP) and served three years [term] as a member of the AFP
Foundation National Board of Directors. For a number of years,
she has been a member of the Association of Fund Raising Officers,
Inc. (AFRO, Inc.) and serves as a consultant to the National
Center for Black Philanthropy.
Early
in her career, Ms. Holmes-Settles traveled internationally
and lived abroad in the U.S. Diplomatic Corps. Upon returning
to Washington, D.C., she became actively involved in presidential
campaign politics. She served as Assistant Press Secretary
in a presidential campaign and as press secretary for a well-known
City Council aspirant in addition to being a senior media
relations manager for a major political party.
Ms.
Holmes-Settles received her Bachelor of Arts with honors from
the University of Delaware, holds a Master of Arts in Organizational
Communication from Howard University, and completed doctoral
coursework in the same area. She also received certification
as a management trainer from the Management Centre in Brussels,
Belgium and maintains her designation as a Certified Fund
Raising Executive from the Association of Fundraising Professionals
for which she has re-qualified for every three years since
1987.
